BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ----- The UAB football team will open the 2009 season with a pair of Conference USA home games and conclude the regular season with a home contest for the first time since the 1998 campaign.
The Blazers, who will be playing their third year under head coach Neil Callaway, will begin the upcoming season with back-to-back games at Legion Field when Rice comes to Birmingham for a Sept. 5 game, a week before C-USA foe SMU plays here on Sept. 12.
"I think it is good opening up with two home games, but there's always concern with starting with two conference games," said UAB head coach Neil Callaway. "I think you generally like to settle into your season before you get into league play.
"But we're excited about it," said Callaway. "I think it is spread out enough, and I like the fact the we are starting the season at home and finishing the season at home. Hopefully, we can come home at the end of the year and be in contention for a conference championship and a bowl berth."
Following the games against the Owls and Mustangs, the Blazers will then look at a stretch of the schedule where they will play five of six games away from home.
UAB plays at in-state foe Troy on Sept. 19 before traveling to College Station, Texas on Sept. 26 for a first-ever meeting with Texas A&M.
The Blazers open the October slate with a conference game at home against Southern Mississippi on Oct. 3, giving them their first three C-USA games of the season at home. After its only open date of the season, UAB heads to Oxford, Miss. on Oct. 17 for a contest with Southeastern Conference opponent Ole Miss.
Games at Marshall (Oct. 24) and at UTEP (Oct. 31) will conclude the month. The Blazers then play their final non-conference game on Nov. 7 when they play host to Florida Atlantic.
UAB makes the trek to Memphis to battle the Tigers on Nov. 14 before playing at East Carolina on Nov. 21.
The Blazers will then close out the regular season schedule with a C-USA home game Nov. 28 against the UCF Knights. The contest will mark the first time since the 1998 season that UAB has finished its schedule at home.
