BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ----- On a day when several UAB teams had their schedules disrupted due to inclement weather in the Birmingham area, the men's tennis team was the one squad that was able to play and the Blazers came away with a 5-1 victory over Chattanooga.
The match was played indoors at Samford University. The teams did not compete in doubles.
UAB (2-5) won five of six singles matches en route to the win, capturing victories at the No. 2-6 singles positions.
The Blazers posted their first win since their season-opening win over North Alabama Feb. 1. Since then, UAB had played five consecutive ranked opponents, all away from home.
"It was good to pick up a win today," said UAB head coach Derek Tarr. "We needed to get a win. We've played some tough teams the past few weeks but we just didn't do what we needed to do to get a win against those teams. What we'd like to do now is build some momentum and confidence before we head west in a couple weeks."
Against Chattanooga Friday, the Blazers won in straight sets in four of their five singles wins. But it was Alex Emery at No. 2 singles and his three-set win (4-6, 6-3, 7-5) over Pavel Vostrikov that may have been the most impressive.
Emery has played in the lower half of the UAB lineup throughout his career and his insertion at No. 2 Friday was the first time he had played that high for the Blazers.
Other UAB winners included Brian Ly at No. 3 singles over Rick van de Bovenkamp (6-4, 6-4), Daniel Moser at No. 4 over Alexandru Butnarcuic (6-3, 6-1), Thomas Petrich at the No. 5 position over Dakota Pate (6-1, 6-4) and Dennis Ehrlich over Gordon Rudell at No. 6 (6-0, 6-1).
The Blazers' only loss on the day came at No. 1 singles as Slawomir Szeremeta fell to Peter Sauska, 6-1, 6-4.
UAB's next action will come on Tuesday, March 3 when the Blazers play host to Mercer at Brook Highland Racquet Club at 2:00 p.m.
