BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- UAB head coach Alan Kaufman has signed four regional golfers who will compete with the Blazers beginning in the Fall of 2010. Landry Haynes (Gainesville, Ga./North Hall HS), Garrett Mayfield (Florence, Ala./Central HS), Wilson McDonald (Mobile, Ala./St. Paul HS) and Michael Ulmer (Fairhope, Ala./Fairhope HS) are the newest additions to the UAB men's golf program.
"I am very pleased with our signing class," UAB golf coach Alan Kaufman said. "These are four of the top golfers in the Southeast Region. I think all four have a good chance of coming in and helping us immediately."
Haynes comes to UAB from North Hall High School where he is coached by Robert Mills. During his high school career, Haynes has made a name for himself as one of the top golfers in the state of Georgia. Last year, Haynes was tabbed the Gainesville Times 2009 Boys Golfer of the Year and was a First Team All-State performer. This past season, Haynes was the regional champion and earned a spot on the all-region team after leading the Trojans to the regional crown. He also claimed runner-up honors at the 2008 Georgia 3A boys state championship.
Haynes has been just as successful in the classroom, as he earned his school's Senior BETA honor, which is awarded a student who has maintained a GPA of 3.5 or above during each year.
Mayfield is considered one of the top golfers in the state of Alabama. The Florence, Ala. native, who played for his father, Steve Mayfield, at Central High School, has been named an Alabama High School Athletic Association (AHSAA) all-state performer for four straight years (2006-09) dating back to his eighth grade season. Mayfield was also tabbed the Florence Times Daily Golfer of the Year for three straight years (2007-09).
Mayfield won back-to-back sectional and sub state tournaments in 2008 and 2009. He is a member of the National Honor Socitey and was a finalist for the Wendy's High School Heisman award for the state of Alabama.
Ulmer is a five-year letterwinner at Fairhope High School under head coach Jeff Hauge (7th-11th grades). Ulmer was named an all-state performer for three straight seasons (2007-09) and an all-county performer in each of the last five years (2004-09). He earned the medalist honor at the 2007 Alabama state championship and also helped lead his team to a fourth-place finish in 2008 and state runner-up finish in 2009.
This summer, Ulmer won a pair of Southeastern Junior Golf Association tournaments championships, capturing the 2009 Lakewood and Fallen Oaks Tournaments. He also had a ninth-place finish at the Future Masters Golf Tournament in which he competed against players from all over the world. Additionally, Ulmer won the 6A High School Section I title in each of the last three years (2007-09). He also won the Mobile Junior Metro championship in 2007 and 2009.
Off the course, Ulmer is equally as impressive, maintaining a 3.8 cumulative GPA. He is a member of the National Honor Society and is expected to finish in the top-20 of his graduating class.
McDonald plays under head coach Sandy Santoli at St. Paul's High School, which is the same high school that former UAB great Zack Sucher attended. McDonald is an AHSAA all-state golfer in each of the past four seasons (2005-08) and was named to the all-metro team by the Mobile Press Register (2009). Last season, he helped lead St. Paul to the boys 5A state championship in 2009.
McDonald was tabbed the 2007 Southeastern Junior Golf Tour Player of the Year and the 2007 Robert Trent Jones Junior Tour Player of the Year. He helped his team to the sectional championship in 2005, 2006 and 2009 and claimed the individual section title in 2008.
