THE WOODLANDS, Texas - The UAB cross country team ran to a sixth-place finish Saturday at the 2009 Conference USA Championships hosted by Houston.
Sophomore Colleen Standridge was the top finisher for the Blazers, finishing 19th overall out of 90 runners with a time of 19:06.50. Standridge topped her previous personal-best 5K time of 19:15.40 set at last year's Walt Disney World Classic.
"Colleen ran a smart race and gave a tremendous effort today," UAB head coach Blake Boldon said.
SMU took the title at the championships with 28 points, followed by runner-up UTEP with 40 points. Rice claimed third place (82), while Tulsa and Houston finished in fourth (90) and fifth place (138), respectively. UAB rounded out the top half of the 12-team field, claiming sixth with 154 points.
"The girls were tentative too early at today's race, but they have done a tremendous job this season," UAB head cross country coach Blake Boldon. "They have done everything I've asked out of them this season and we hope to finish better next year, but right now we're going to focus our attention on the regional meet."
