BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The Blazers' cross country squad will be headed to Tennessee to take part in the 5k Memphis Twilight on Saturday evening. The meet is one of the largest of the year with hundreds of runners participating.
"It's a flat, fast course," said UAB head coach Ray Stanfield. "It's a neat deal to run at night and we should run better than we did last week."
Last week, in the first meet of the season, the Blazers finished third at the Belmont Opener. Sophomore Stephanie Gammon crossed the line first for the Blazers finishing fourth overall in a time of 14:41:55. Junior Kristina Olsen followed finishing in fifth place overall (14:45.34).
The meet will also serve as a preview of the Conference USA Cross Country Championship. The runners will be running the same course come Nov. 1.
"To show up to the conference championship as a freshman is nerve-racking enough," Stanfield said. "Then to not know the course is another thing. At least we are going to take that out of it. "
Start time for the Blazers is scheduled for 8:40 p.m. CDT. The course will cover the University of Memphis' soccer facility and practice fields ending in the middle of the Mike Rose Soccer Stadium.
A total of 41 collegiate schools are scheduled to participate including local rival Birmingham-Southern and C-USA foes Southern Miss, Tulane, and Memphis.
