BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The UAB football team had to shorten its normal practice routine on Tuesday afternoon, due to heavy rains in the Birmingham area. The Blazers practiced for approximately 90 minutes in helmets and shoulder pads, as they continue preparations for the 2008 opener on Aug. 30 against Tulsa.
Despite the bad weather, head coach Neil Callaway felt like his team was able to get some things out of Tuesday's session.
"I think we got some good out of it," Callaway said. "We had to cut our practice in half due to the weather. To be honest, we had such a hard day (Monday) that we weren't going to go full steam today."
The Blazers began the practice by getting some individual work early on and were also able to practice the one-minute offense. Callaway feels that even though the conditions weren't ideal, it was good to get this kind of practice in.
"I think it was productive," Callaway said. "We got some individual work early and worked a lot on our running game. Also worked on our one-minute offense that probably wasn't fair to the offense considering the conditions. However, you have to play in wet weather sometimes so maybe it will help us down the road."
UAB will open the 2008 slate with a home game against Conference USA foe Tulsa on Saturday, Aug. 30. It marks the first time in program history that the Blazers have opened a season against a C-USA opponent. The Blazers and Golden Hurricane will kick off at 3 p.m. CT at Legion Field.
