BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - UAB junior Zach Sucher continues to add hardware on what has been an outstanding 2007-08 campaign. For the second time this season and fourth time in his career, Sucher has been tabbed the Conference USA Men's Golfer of the Week, announced league officials on Wednesday.
Sucher, who entered the Bank of America Intercollegiate earlier this week ranked as the nation's 45th-ranked golfer, closed the event with an impressive performance, concluding play with a nine-under par 207 to capture medalist honors. After carding rounds of 69 and 70 during Monday's opening two rounds, Sucher scorched the par-72, 7,305-yard Reunion Golf Course over Tuesday's final 18 with a four-under par 68. He recorded a total of five birdies with just two bogeys over the final round to finish with a 207.
His three rounds of 70 and below during the event now give him 12 such rounds this season. He was one of just two players to break 70 over the final 18 holes, helping him capture the event by two strokes. This is Sucher's fourth career weekly honor, his second in 2007-08 (Feb. 20).
"I am very happy for Zach," UAB head coach Alan Kaufman said. "He had an outstanding performance in what was a very competitive tournament. Zach is really peaking right now and that is going to be a big help as we head into postseason play. He is certainly deserving of this award."
Sucher entered the event on a hot streak after capturing the Azalea Amateur Championship on March 30. The 2007 Honorable Mention All-America also captured medalist honors at the Gator Invitational earlier in this spring (Feb. 9-10).
Sucher and the Blazers will next be in action when they compete at the 2008 Conference USA Championships on April 20-22, in Texarkana, Ark.
