BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ----- The UAB football team will wrap up its spring drills Saturday when the Blazers hold their spring game at Legion Field at 1:00 p.m.
This year's spring practice has been a lot different than a year ago when the head coach Neil Callaway and his staff were seeing their team on the field for the first time. Even with the level of familiarity between coaches and players being much higher, the Blazers spent a large majority of their early spring work trying to correct mistakes made last fall.
"We went back and looked at the mistakes we had last fall," said head coach Neil Callaway. "The first half of the spring, we just played base. We were very vanilla and just wanted to get better at those things. The last five or six practices, we've blitzed more. We've done some different things. I think we've made a lot of progress."
Callaway indicated that the format for Saturday's scrimmage will resemble a regular game as much as possible. There will be plenty of No. 1 offense going against the No. 1 defense and the No. 2 units doing the same.
"We're going to play a normal game situation with a 12-minute clock," said Callaway. "Whatever situations arise, whether it it be a 1-minute drill, trying to run the clock out. whatever it may be, we're going to use the 40-second clock (new in college football)."
Callaway said the kicking game will be different Saturday as only field goals and extra points will be tried. For kickoffs, the ball will be placed at the 30-yard-line. In punt situations, instead of kicking, the ball will be moved 40 yards down the field before changing possession.
Blazer junior quarterback Joe Webb will look for his third productive scrimmage of the spring. Webb has hit 37-of-56 passes for 533 yards and four touchdowns with only one interception in the first two scrimmages of the spring.
Admission to Saturday's scrimmage is free. Fans will be able to enter Legion Field through Gates 5-A, 5-B and Gate 7.
