BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ----- The UAB football team opened 2008 spring drills here Wednesday with the Blazers moving practice indoors to Wallace Gym due to wet field conditions. The decision to move inside was made early in the morning as heavy rains hit the Birmingham area.
Despite the change in plans and holding the first workout inside, UAB second-year head coach Neil Callaway was pleased with his team's first of 15 spring workouts.
"I think we got a lot out of it," said Callaway. "The enthusiasm and effort were there. The attitude was very good today. "
Callaway said starting spring practice this year is a lot different than a year ago. "We're (players and coaches) are familiar with each other," he said. "They (players) know what's expected of them and we have a better idea about them. That makes a big difference."
Depth and overall numbers are still a concern for Callaway and his staff. That situation will be helped in August when preseason camp begins and newcomers arrive. Still, the level of experience will be improved this season. "We played a lot of freshmen last year, and they're a year older. You can tell the continuity is better."
The Blazers are scheduled to conclude their spring drills on Saturday, April 12 with a scrimmage.
