BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Sophomore Stephanie Gammon, a member of the UAB cross country team, has been named to the 2008 Conference USA Cross Country All-Academic Team, as announced by the league office Wednesday.
Gammon has a cumulative grade point average of 3.96 while majoring in health sciences at UAB. During her freshman year she was named to UAB's Dean's List in the fall of 2007 and received Presidential Honors for her academic work in the spring of 2008.
"Stephanie falls in line with the great student-athletes we have had on our cross country team the past seven years," said UAB cross country head coach Ray Stanfield. "She's a leader on the course as well as in the classroom."
During the season, Gammon crossed the finish line first for the Blazers in every meet. Her top finish came at the 5K Walt Disney World Classic where she claimed third place overall in a time of 17:30.00 and led the Blazers to their first team win on the season. She also set personal records in the 4K (14:41.55), 5K (17:28.27) and 6K run (21:35.21) during the season.
Others named to the All-Academic team were Tulsa's Dawn Nagazina, Lennie Waite of Rice, Kathleen Clark of Marshall and Emily Malinowski of Memphis. To be considered for the award, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.2 cumulative grade point average.
