MARYVILLE, Tenn. - The UAB cross country team finished sixth of 23 teams Saturday at the 2008 NCAA South Regional Championships on Saturday to wrap up their 2008 season.
Leading the way for the Blazers once again was sophomore Stephanie Gammon. Gammon finished the 6K course in 18th-place overall with a time of 21:35.21.
"We ran good," said head coach Ray Stanfield. "We came into the race ranked sixth and that's where we finished. We did what we were supposed to do."
Freshman Sandra Lundberg finished in 22:17.34, which was good for 36th place. Freshman Rhiannon Johns claimed 43rd place (22:25.65) with junior Kristina Olsen crossing the line at 22:34.36 and in 46th place. Rounding out the scoring for the Blazers was redshirt-sophomore Kendel Hood in 55th place (22:54.45).
"Sandra, Rhiannon and Kendel ran good," said Stanfield. "It was like at the Conference USA Championship, we ran good. Especially with this young team running at regionals for the first time."
UAB finished with 198 points, placing behind champion Florida State (41), Florida (64), Tennessee (116), Georgia (154) and Auburn (156).
The Blazers' freshmen Kristina Vaughn finished 82nd (23:27.58) and Katie Jorgensen 98th (23:48.60) in the meet that featured 156 individual competitors.
Auburn's Hollie Knight claimed the individual title with a course-record time of 20:29.67.
