BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ----- When Neil Callaway was named the head football coach at UAB, he made it clear that success in the classroom would be a priority of his for the Blazer players.
The academic results for the just completed fall semester demonstrate that the Blazers are off to a good start in achieving that success as 20 UAB players earned 3.0 GPAs or better, including 13 returning Blazers.
"Obviously, we are proud of the guys who earned 3.0s in the fall," said Callaway. "We'd like to have twice as many on the list and will work toward improving that number."
Among the returning players, junior Richard Carter achieved a 4.0 GPA with sophomore B.J. Steed (3.7) and freshman Marquis Coleman (3.66) not far behind.
"We try to emphasize to our players that at some point, they are going to be through playing football," said Callaway, "and that having a degree from UAB will go a long way toward them being successful in the future."
Other Blazers earning 3.0 or better GPAs in the fall included: Freshmen Ugonna Amarikawa, senior Chris Barrett, Justin Brown, sophomore Brandon Carlisle, senior Nick Coon, freshman Charlie Edwards, junior Nick Haddad, freshman Keon Harris; freshman Tye Huff, Jacob Kearly and sophomore Jim Mitchell.
Also included on the 3.0 or better list are: redshirt freshmen Anthony Speight, sophomore B.J. Steed, senior Blake Thackston, senior Daniel Turner and junior Swazye Waters.
