BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The UAB football team continued scout team preparations for 18 periods Wednesday afternoon as it closes in on its 2007 Conference USA opener at Tulsa Saturday night at 6:00 p.m. CT. Near 90-degree temperatures welcomed the Blazers to the practice fields Wednesday, much warmer than the preliminary gametime forecast in Tulsa Saturday night.
UAB head coach Neil Callaway said he felt good about his team's progress when talking to the media after practice.
"It was okay today," he said. "We got a lot more scout team looks on Tulsa. It seems like we're catching on a little bit better. Now we have tomorrow to finish things up and then we'll see what happens in Tulsa."
There has been plenty of talk throughout the week about the high-powered offense the Blazers will look to tame on Saturday.
The Golden Hurricane leads Conference USA in pass offense, averaging 383.7 yards per game through the air, to go along with the eighth-highest rush offense (121.7). Tulsa has a production rate of 505.3 total offensive yards per game (also tops in C-USA) through its three contests this season.
"If we keep their offense off of the field, that would be big for us," Callaway said. "They are leading Conference USA in almost every offensive statistical category except rushing, so keeping their offense off the field will be a big factor."
The Blazers and the Golden Hurricane are slated to get underway at 6 p.m. CT in H.A. Chapman Stadium in Tulsa, Okla. Radio coverage of the game can be heard on the Blazers ISP Sports Network flagship station WUHT 107.7 FM. The broadcast can also be heard on affiliates WIQR 1410 AM in Montgomery, WTRB 98.3 FM in Talladega and WACT 1420 AM in Tuscaloosa.
