BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -The UAB football team put in 19 physical periods in full pads Tuesday as it continued preparations for its Conference USA opener at Tulsa Saturday night. The Blazers will hold two more practices before flying to Tulsa on Friday.
While meeting with the media following Tuesday's workout, UAB head coach Neil Callaway expressed both positive and negative feelings towards the afternoon session.
"We were hot and cold on both sides today," he said. "The defense started off good, slowed down in the middle and finished up strong. Vice versus for the offense. At the end in the competition stuff, I thought the defense looked pretty good so that was good for them."
Saturday will be the first-ever meeting between the Blazers and the Golden Hurricane. Tulsa is coming off a 62-21 loss to Oklahoma last Friday in which it combined for 398 yards of total offense.
Callaway, whose Blazers are coming off their open week after shutting out Alcorn State, 22-0, on Sept. 15, said he saw improvements in Tuesday's workout in preparing for a challenging opponent in the Golden Hurricane.
"I thought we looked better and more refreshed today, but we're still learning how to practice," Callaway said. "Today was a hard Tuesday for us. There's a lot to rehearse because of all the stuff Tulsa does."
The Blazers and the Golden Hurricane are slated to get underway at 6 p.m. CT in H.A. Chapman Stadium in Tulsa, Okla.
Radio coverage of the game can be heard on the Blazers ISP Sports Network flagship station WUHT 107.7 FM. The broadcast can also be heard on affiliates WIQR 1410 AM in Montgomery, WTRB 98.3 FM in Talladega and WACT 1420 AM in Tuscaloosa.
