BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ----- The UAB football team has the weekend off, but that did not stop them from putting in a 15-period practice with shoulder pads and helmets on Thursday.
The Blazers started practice slow but picked up intensity halfway through the practice, and head coach Neil Callaway could tell his team is excited to have the weekend off.
"Today's practice was okay," Callaway said. "Early on I thought they were kind of going through the motions, but the practice picked up as we went through it.
"You can tell the players are excited at having the weekend off and being able to go home and see their families, which is good because they haven't been home since the beginning of camp."
The Blazers used the three days of practice to familiarize themselves with Tulsa and how they plan to handle the different looks that the Golden Hurricanes will bring to the table when the two teams meet for both schools' first Conference USA game on Sept. 29.
"I think we got a lot out of this week," Callaway said. "We were able to get started with preparation for Tulsa, and they do a lot of unconventional stuff on both sides of the ball. So it was good to get a look at all of that. Plus we worked to get better which we hopefully did."
Tulsa is in action Friday when it plays host to host No. 3 Oklahoma.
