BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The UAB football team went through a 25-period practice, its second of the fall, at the practice fields in the 90-plus degree heat on Monday afternoon. The Blazers went through a multitude of activities, including individual position drills, offensive and defensive drills and no-contact 11-on-11 practice.
Head coach Neil Callaway saw some positive and negative aspects during the two-hour session, but was pleased with his squad's overall performance during the day.
"I thought the young offensive linemen, particularly Terence Edge and Matt McCants, did some good things," said Callaway. "I think the receivers were better catching the ball. I thought Darryl Harris had a real good day. The quarterbacks need to be a little more accurate and I didn't think the DB's looked as good.
"Overall, I thought it was a decent day. You've just got to keep on grinding."
Monday was the team's final day of practice in just shorts and helmets. On Tuesday, the Blazers will strap on shoulder pads for the first time this year, followed by their first session in full pads on Thursday.
Callaway expects the atmosphere at practice to be a little different once they start putting on the pads on Tuesday.
"It will change," said Callaway. "It will be a little more contact and we will try to make everything full speed."
The Blazers will continue their preparation in fall camp on Tuesday afternoon when they put on shoulder pads for the first time this preseason.
UAB is gearing up for its 2007 season opener at Michigan State on Sept. 1 in East Lansing, Mich. Kickoff is scheduled for 12 p.m. ET and the game will be televised on ESPN2.
