BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -----The UAB football team practiced Thursday for its final time, before Saturday's 2007 season opener against Michigan State.
The Blazers worked through a short afternoon practice and head coach Neil Callaway had the sense that his team was ready to start the season.
"I think there's a lot of excitement," he said. "I felt that on Tuesday, after we had a couple of days off. Today you could tell they were excited and ready to go. I think they'll play hard and the best they can and we'll go up there and see what happens."
Thursday's final practice focused rehearsal of game-time situations and fine-tuning the small aspects of the Blazers' game plan against the Spartans. Time was also spent working on communications that are fundamental for playing in front a crowd expected to be near 70,000 fans.
"We were also working on making sure all the communications on the sideline and field is like it needs to be," Callaway said. "I'm sure at times if we let it, there's going to be a lot of crowd noise Saturday. So we just worked on that so we don't have any problems."
Callaway has also been preparing for the season opener. Saturday's game will be the first game as a head coach in a career that has spanned 29 years.
Kickoff for Saturday's game is at 11:00 am CDT and will be broadcast live on ESPN2.
Radio coverage of UAB football can also be heard on the Blazers ISP Network flagship station WUHT 101.7 FM. The broadcast can also be heard on affiliates WIQR 1410 AM in Montgomery, WTRB 98.3 FM in Talladega, and WACT 1420 AM in Tuscaloosa.
