BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ----- The UAB football team concluded its final two-a-day workout Monday and head coach Neil Callaway felt that his team was productive as it continues to prepare for the upcoming season, but said the Blazers still have to improve before their season opener.
"I feel we got a lot accomplished during these sessions," Callaway said. "We pushed them hard and demanded a lot from them, both on and off the field. I think we got a lot done but we still have a long way to go."
Callaway called the morning session enthusiastic, but was less content with the day's second practice.
"This afternoon's practice was okay, but not as good as this morning's practice," Callaway said. "Starting tomorrow we start preparing for Michigan State."
Following the morning session, Callaway announced that senior Sam Hunt will be the starter at quarterback when UAB opens the season Sept. 1 against the Spartans.
The decision to name Hunt the starter comes two weeks after the opening of fall practice and a competitive battle with sophomore Joseph Webb for the starting spot. The decision ultimately came to down to Callaway giving the nod to a senior.
"It was a very close battle," Callaway said. "When you look at all the stats and their performance it's hard to differentiate between the two. The only real difference between them really was Sam being a senior. And with everything being equal I think you should go with the senior."
Callaway said Webb would also be used as a quarterback.
The Blazers' matchup against the Spartans will be televised live at 11 p.m. CT on ESPN2 from East Lansing, Mich.
Tickets for the upcoming season are now available for purchase online at UABsports.com or by contacting the UAB Ticket Office at (205) 975-8221. Single-game tickets begin at $15.
