BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The UAB football team continued to battle the 100-plus degree temperatures in fall camp on Monday, which included a pair of practices for the squad. The Blazers went through an 18-period session in the morning where they donned full pads, followed by another 18-period practice in the afternoon in shoulder pads and shorts.
Head coach Neil Callaway recognizes the impact that the heat has on a football team this time of year, but was less than impressed with the Blazers' effort and intensity during their first session of the day.
"I was disappointed in this morning," said Callaway. "It's been hot, but if we're going to be a good football team, we've got to get through adversity.
Callaway saw a dramatic improvement from the morning session to the afternoon, with the second practice of the day proving more encouraging for the first-year head coach.
"I thought we looked better," said Callaway. "It was a better tempo this afternoon than this morning. Of course, we didn't have as much contact this afternoon, which probably helped a little bit with that, but I thought it was much better this afternoon."
The Blazers will continue their fall camp schedule on Tuesday with one session scheduled in the afternoon.
UAB is preparing for its 2007 season opener on Sept. 1 at Michigan State in East Lansing, Mich. The Blazers and the Spartans will face off in a 12 p.m. ET battle, which will air live on ESPN2.
