UAB Men's Tennis Team Tops Jacksonville State, 6-1

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The UAB men's tennis team protected its home court by defeating in-state foe Jacksonville State, 6-1, on Tuesday afternoon in Birmingham. The Blazers have now claimed victories in two consecutive outings, previously beating East Carolina, 4-3, on February 24.
"We had several tough matches today in the top of the lineup," said UAB head coach Derek Tarr. "Our number one, two and three showed that they can play good tennis against tough players."
In the singles matches, the Blazers' No. 1 performer, Thomas Weiss, outlasted Scott Robertson in three sets, 6-3, 4-6, 6-4. Johannes Spangenberg swept JSU's Bernado Bachino in straight sets, 7-5, 6-3, in the No. 2 spot.
UAB kept its winning streak going as No. 3 Tim Bauer defeated Chris Duke, 6-0, 4-6, 6-3. The Blazers picked up two additional wins in the singles category, courtesy of No. 5 Alex Emery and No. 6 Thomas Petrich.
Emery got past Jacksonville State's Diego Pazsoldan in straight sets, 6-2, 6-3, while Petrich was also a straight-set winner over Joey Unkenholz, 6-2, 6-1.
The Gamecocks' only victory in singles was at the No. 4 spot, where JSU's Eduardo Saratt defeated UAB's Adrian Tollstam, 6-3, 6-0.
The Blazers continued winning in doubles play as well, earning a pair of wins in that department. UAB's No. 2 team of Bauer and Spangenberg got past Robertson and Duke, 8-4, and the No. 3 duo of Emery and Weiss rolled past JSU's Saratt and Pazsoldan, 8-1.
Jacksonville State picked up its lone win in doubles play as its No. 1 team of Unkenholz and Bachino were winners over UAB's Tollstam and Petrich.
"Thomas Weiss has been playing really well," said Tarr. "He has won his last two matches and moved from the No. 3 position to the No. 1 spot. He is just playing good tennis right now."
The Blazers will be back in action on March 9 when they host Charleston Southern in a 12:30 p.m. match at the Brook Highland Racquet Club.
