BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - UAB men's golfer Zach Sucher was selected as the Conference USA Men's Golfer of the Week, announced league officials on Monday. Sucher, who is ranked No. 93 in the nation according to Golfweek.com, earned the award after capturing a second-place finish at the Seminole Intercollegiate on March 4-6.
It is part of the reason why the UAB men's golf team improved to No. 33 in the latest Golfweek rankings, announced on March 12. Furthermore, along with Sucher's No. 93 national ranking, UAB senior Garrett Osborn improved to No. 82 in the nation.
"This is a very deserving award for Zach," UAB head coach Alan Kaufman said. "Zach has been playing well for us and carried us at the Seminole Intercollegiate. He is really coming into his own and has worked extremely hard on his game. It's good to see the hard work is paying off and he is being recognized for it."
Sucher finished second in a field that consisted of 10 of the 15 schools competing ranked among the top 40 in the nation at the Seminole Intercollegiate. Additionally, he finished just two shots behind the nation's eighth-ranked player in East Tennessee State's Rhys Davies, and defeated 11 other players ranked among the nation's top 100. Sucher finished the three-day, 72-hole event at four-under par 212, marking his second best tournament score of his career. His 54-hole total and 36-hole mark of 143 were both spring season lows.
Sucher closed tournament play with two sub-70 rounds, carding a three-under par 69 during the tournament's opening round, as well as the final 18 holes. They marked the sixth and seventh sub-70 rounds this season for the Mobile, Ala. native. For the year, Sucher is second on the team, averaging 72.96 per round, dropping over three strokes off last season's per round average (76.16).
The Blazers will return to action on March 19 when they travel to Santa Cruz, Calif. to compete in the Western Intercollegiate, hosted by San Jose State University. The two-day event will be held at the Pasatiempo Golf Course.
