BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The UAB football team held a physical, 18-period practice Tuesday afternoon on the UAB practice fields. Tuesday was the start of on-field preparations for UAB's game against Southern Miss on Saturday. The Blazers will be attempting to beat the Golden Eagles for the first time.
Though UAB has never beaten Southern Miss, the games have been tightly contested, with Southern Miss winning five of the seven games by five points or less.
UAB head coach Neil Callaway told the media following practice Tuesday that he was pleased with the emotion he saw from his team during practice.
"The enthusiasm was good out here today and I thought we got a lot of good work in," he said. "Looking back, I probably made a mistake by not doing that (physical practices) for a few weeks."
Both sides of the ball caught Callaway's eye Tuesday afternoon.
"Offense won the competition at the end there, but I thought the defense had a good day, too," he said. "We have to play hard, play fast and play physical. If you don't practice that way, you're not going to play that way.
The Blazers and Golden Eagles will kick off at 6:00 p.m. at Legion Field on Saturday.
The game will be televised regionally by CSS. Radio coverage of the game can be heard on the Blazers' ISP Sports Network flagship station WUHT 107.7 FM. The broadcast can also be heard on affiliates WIQR 1410 AM in Montgomery, WTRB 98.3 FM in Talladega and WACT 1420 AM in Tuscaloosa.
