BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The UAB football team closed the practice week with high spirits on Thursday, following a nearly two-hour practice without pads. UAB head coach Neil Callaway felt like his team ended the week on a good note and was pleased with the squad's performance during the 15-period practice.
"Practice went real good today," Callaway said. "We have had to do a lot of adjustments throughout the week defensively and they were a lot sharper today. Offensively it was certainly a good practice."
Callaway hopes that UAB's 26-21 Conference USA victory last Saturday over Tulane gave his team some confidence. But even so, the first-year head coach cautions that his men can't dwell too long on wins or losses.
"I hope that last week's win gave us some confidence," Callaway said. "We have to put that one behind us, though, and keep taking them one game at a time.
"I have been very proud of the guys all year for hanging in there. They are keeping a good attitude and continue to want to do things the right way."
Callaway also named Bryant Turner (defense), Sam Hunt (offense) and Tony Shepherd (special teams) as captains for Saturday's 6 p.m. kickoff against the Cougars.
The Blazers, who will put their 2-0 home record on the line against Houston, are playing their second consecutive game at Legion Field and third game at home this season. It will also mark sixth all-time meeting between the schools, with the Blazers holding the series advantage, 4-1.
Radio coverage of the game can be heard on the Blazers' ISP Sports Network flagship station WUHT 107.7 FM. The broadcast can also be heard on affiliates WIQR 1410 AM in Montgomery, WTRB 98.3 FM in Talladega and WACT 1420 AM in Tuscaloosa.
