BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ----- UAB head football coach Neil Callaway has added two more coaches to his new Blazer coaching staff.
Lorenzo "Zo" Costantini has joined the UAB staff as the defensive line coach while Steve Martin comes to Birmingham to serve as the football program's strength and conditioning coach.
Costantini comes to UAB after a three-year stint on the coaching staff at fellow Conference USA member Tulane. He coached the Green Wave defensive line while in New Orleans.
Costantini also has spent coaching time at two other C-USA schools before they became league members. He served on the staff at UCF from 2000-03 and at UTEP from 1995-99. Costantini was a four-year letterwinner as a defensive tackle for the Miners from 1986-90 and graduated from the El Paso university in 1990.
"He has worked with Coach (Eric) Schumann at Tulane," Callaway said of his new D-Line coach. "I have been very impressed with his work ethic. He has a passion for the game and for coaching young men."
Martin brings a significant amount of experience in the strength and conditioning area to the Blazers. A former player at Alabama himself, he has served as a strength coach at his alma mater, as well as at TCU. He also spent time as a graduate assistant coach at Auburn in 1990-91.
Martin was a graduate assistant at TCU in 1992 before being named head strength and conditioning coach in 1993. He returned to Alabama in 1997. He is a 1988 graduate of Alabama.
"I have known Steve for a long time," said Callaway. "He does an outstanding job with his strength program. He expects a lot out of the athletes he works with, but he has a great rapport with them and has done an outstanding job everywhere he has been."
Costantini and Martin are the most recent additions to the UAB staff. Eric Schumann (defensive coordinator/safeties), Tyson Helton (quarterbacks) and Ervin Lewis (director of football operations) were announced to Callaway's staff on Friday.
Callaway also has hired Steve Davenport as running backs coach, Will Friend as offensive line coach, Tyson Summers as linebackers coach and Corey Barlow as the cornerbacks coach.
