Blazers Dominate UCF, 66-55

ORLANDO, Fla. - The UAB women's basketball team moved to 4-0 in Conference USA play, and 9-7 overall, with an 11-point victory over the Golden Knights of UCF, 66-55, Friday evening within the confines of UCF Arena. Senior guard Carmen Guzman tallied a game-high 29 points on 10-of-13 from the field, including 5-of-7 from behind the arc.
The Blazers started the game with a 10-2 run, led by a pair of three's by Guzman for UAB's first buckets of the contest. UAB controlled the first 20 minutes of the game, jumping out to as much as a 20-point lead and going into halftime with a 17-point advantage, 41-24.
UAB shot 48.4 percent from the field, compared to just 33.3 percent for the Golden Knights. Guzman dropped 16 points on 6-of-8 shooting, including a trio of three's, in the first half alone. Keunta Miles of UCF also scored in double figures during the first period, with 12 points on 6-of-9 from the floor.
In the first minutes of the second half, the Golden Knights put together a 12-6 run against the Blazers to cut the lead to 11, 47-36, with 16:20 left in the game. UAB refused to give up double-digit lead and maintained it throughout the remainder of the game, eventually winning by a score of 66-55.
Guzman, in addition to her 29 points, had five rebounds and team-high numbers in both assists and steals with three and four respectively. Senior forward Shimena Moore contributed nine points and junior Diamond Rogers added seven points and a game-high 10 rebounds to the Blazers' effort.
Miles led UCF in scoring with 18 points on the night, followed by Francine Houston with 13. Miles and Kristin Thomas both grabbed a team-high seven boards and Amber Long led the Golden Knights in assists with six.
The Blazers, who now own sole possession of first place in the conference, will put their undefeated league record on the line Sunday, January 14 against the Golden Eagles of Southern Miss. The C-USA showdown is schedule for a 2 p.m. tip-off and will be televised on CSTV.
