BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The UAB football team endured a busy day on Tuesday that will soon become second-nature to them. It marked the first day of classes for the fall semester at UAB, including the first day of college for many of the freshman on the football team. The Blazers also continued their preseason preparation with an afternoon practice session in shoulder pads and shorts.
"It went good," said head coach Watson Brown. "It was one of the better practices on the first day of class. Usually that is not a very good focus day. I thought it was pretty good."
Tuesday's schedule will become routine to the players as this will be their everyday schedule for much of the fall semester. Now that two-a-days have ended and school has begun, the Blazers will hold their practice sessions during the afternoon while the players attend classes in the morning.
Brown is planning on having the squad practice in full pads twice this week, Wednesday and Friday. The Blazers will have practice sessions on Thursday and Saturday as well, but they will be in shorts.
"We have to slowly start backing off," expressed Brown. "We are just flat wore out right now. We have to start letting them get their legs back. We still have some physical work to do. I want to try to go two more pad days this week, but we need to start backing off on the time on the field."
The Blazers are continuing their preparation for the 2006 season opener at Oklahoma on September 2. The 6 p.m. contest will be nationally televised on TBS.
The radio coverage can be heard on the Blazers ISP Sports Network, beginning at 4:30 p.m. CST. Birmingham listeners can follow all the action on WYDE 101.1 FM, and WIQR 1410 AM in Montgomery.
To get everyone excited about the upcoming season, which is less than two weeks away, UAB is hosing Football Fan Day on Saturday, August 26 on the concourse of Bartow Arena. Fans will have the opportunity to meet the Blazer football team and get autographs from all of the UAB players and coaches. Admission and parking are free, so bring your family and friends for an exciting afternoon of Blazer football as we kickoff the 2006 season.
