Blazers Fall At 24th-Ranked Mississippi State, 4-0

STARKVILLE, Miss. --- The UAB men's tennis team fell to Mississippi State, the 24th-ranked team in the nation, 4-0, Friday afternoon. All three doubles matches and the first set of all six singles matches were played at the A.J. Pitts Tennis Centre before the match was moved indoors to McCarthy Gymnasium due to rain. Both facilities are on the Mississippi State campus.
Play began with doubles action. In the No. 3 position, Bulldogs Ryan Farlow and Florent Girod defeated UAB's Johannes Spangenberg and Adrian Tollstam, 8-4. Next, UAB's Sebastian Falk and Andre Maier tallied an 8-6 victory over Philippe Frayssinou and Pierre Mouillon in the No. 2 slot to even things up. However, at the No. 1 spot, Ivan Bjelica and Jose-Carlos Pinto of Mississippi State were 8-6 winners of UAB's Anton Mavrin and Kristijan Mitrovski, giving the Bulldogs the point.
Mississippi State (1-0) was impressive in singles play, winning the first three matches of the afternoon. In the No. 1 match, MSU's Bjelica was a 6-1, 6-2 winner over Mitrovski. At the No. 2 singles position, the Bulldogs' Mouillon defeated Mavrin, 6-4, 3-6, 7-6(4). Pinto clinched the match for Mississippi State by defeating Falk, 6-3, 3-6, 7-6(3), in the No. 3 slot.
UAB (1-1) will host Freed Hardeman Monday, Feb. 6, at 2 p.m., at Brook Highland Racquet Club.
