UAB Wins Exhibition Game, 87-65, over Avantis Turiba

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ---- - The UAB women's basketball team racked up 87 points on its way to a 22-point victory over Latvian-based Avantis Turiba in the Blazers' first-and-only exhibition contest of the season. UAB was led by a trio of Blazers' who scored in double figures, including a team-best 30 points by senior guard Carmen Guzman.
Guzman, a preseason first-team All-Conference USA selection, got a good start to her senior campaign by tallying 30 points, three rebounds, one assist and a team-high four steals. The New York, N.Y. native was 9-of-14 from the field and 12-of-13 form the charity stripe.
Junior forward Christon Ingram hit 7 of her 11 shot attempts for 17 points on the night. Freshman Amanda Scott, in her UAB debut, was the third Blazer to hit double figures with 16 points on 5-of-8 shooting, including four from three-point range. Scott also showed her power underneath the basket, grabbing a team-high six rebounds.
Avantis Turiba was led in points by Zane Lapsina with 21 on 8-of-13 shooting, including five from behind the arc. Santa Dreimane nabbed 14 points while Aija Brumermane and Elina Zike had 12 points each.
The Blazers are preparing for their 2006-07 regular-season opener on November 12 when they travel to Tallahassee, Fla. to take on the Florida State Seminoles. UAB's season home opener is Tuesday, November 14 when SEC foe Ole Miss invades Bartow Arena at 7 p.m.
