UAB Falls to Jackson State, 78-67

JACKSON, Miss. - The UAB women's basketball team could not hold onto its halftime lead and fell to the Lady Tigers of Jackson State, 78-67, Monday evening at the Lee E. Williams Center.
Senior Carmen Guzman led the Blazers with 27 points on 10-of-16 shooting, which marks her fifth consecutive double-digit game of the season.
The Blazers jumped out to an early lead, topping the Lady Tigers by as much as 10 at the 12:47 mark on a jumper by junior Diamond Rogers. Jackson State, slowly but surely, chipped away at UAB's lead and climbed to within two at halftime, 30-28.
Jackson State wasted no time evening the playing field when Shelita Burns hit a jumper less than 30 seconds into the second half to tie the score at 30-all. The Lady Tigers took their first lead of the game on their next possession when Krystal Fontenot hit a shot to put JSU up, 32-30.
After gaining their first lead of the game, the Lady Tigers carried all of the momentum throughout the rest of the game, going up by as much as 20 points at the 5:53 mark. Jackson State went on to win the contest by 11, 78-67. It also serves as JSU's second consecutive victory over a Conference USA team, as the Lady Tigers topped Southern Miss on November 21.
Along with Guzman's 27 points, Rogers was the only other Blazer in double figures with 17 points. Rogers, who is a native of Jackson, Miss., made quite a showing in her hometown with a team-high five rebounds, four assists and two blocks to go along with her 17 points.
Despite the loss, the Blazers held the shooting advantage, hitting 26-of-51 shots (51.0%), including 6-of-14 from three-point range. Jackson State hit 50.0 percent of its shot, connecting on 26-of-52 on the night.
The Lady Tigers also earned 25 points at the free throw line, hitting 25-of-33 from the charity stripe. UAB made just 12 free throw attempts, sinking nine of them for the game.
Next up for the Blazers is a home game with SEC foe Vanderbilt on Thursday, November 30. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. in Bartow Arena.
