BIRMINGHAM, Ala. --- The UAB football team hit the practice field Tuesday afternoon for under two hours in pads and helmets, as the Blazers began preparations for their game against Troy. The Blazers face Troy on Saturday, Sept. 10, in Troy, Ala., their second-straight road contest.
"Practice went very well today," said UAB head coach Watson Brown. "It was very workman like. I think we're going to be ready to play. Troy is always an aggressive football team. Not a bunch of teams have gone down there and scored a lot of points on them, so you have to figure out a way to score points on the defense. Especially at home. They're just an aggressive team and they're a good team, so we have to play well. It's no different to me than it was last week."
UAB is looking for its first win of the season as the Blazers lost a hard-fought game to third-ranked Tennessee in the season opener. The Blazers narrowly fell to the Vols, 17-10, before a crowd of 107,529, the largest crowd to ever watch UAB.
Troy opened the 2005 campaign with a 27-10 victory over Cal Poly at home. The Trojans led the game, 17-0, at the end of the first quarter and held Cal Poly to only 139 yards of offense in the contest.
The two teams are meeting for the fifth time, with the Trojans holding a 3-1 advantage in the series. In the last meeting, Troy defeated the Blazers, 20-9, at Legion Field on Sept. 13, 2003. The Trojans won the first two meetings, before UAB beat Troy, 27-26, during the 2002 season.
The game, which kicks off at 7:00 p.m. CT in Movie Gallery Stadium, will be televised as part of the ESPN Plus package. In the Birmingham market, the game can be seen on WABM TV (UPN 68).
