BIRMINGHAM, Ala. --- The UAB women's soccer team finished second at the 2005 Nike Classic after beating the Louisville Cardinals, 1-0, Sunday afternoon at West Campus Field.
UAB and UL were matched up very closely in the first half and were tied at 0-0 at the break. The Blazers came out in the second half and out-shot the Cardinals 10-to-4 resulting in the winning goal.
In the 45th minute, junior Jennifer Williams scored her first goal of the season and the only goal for UAB. Sophomore Sally Palmer was credited with the assist on the give to Williams for the goal.
"I'm much happier today because of the effort," UAB head coach Paul Harbin said. "Effort was our number one priority today and we need to challenge everything. Sally (Palmer) set the tone for the day after winning the first ball. I was very pleased that we were very organized in the back and protected our lead."
Defensively for the Blazers, junior Julie McFarlane improved to 1-0 on the season after posting her first shutout. McFarlane played the full 90 minutes recording three saves.
Kennesaw State finished first in the tournament after going 2-0. UAB finished second after winning the tie breaker over Louisville, while Tulane placed fourth.
