BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ----- For the fourth-consecutive year, the UAB cross country team begins its season at the Belmont Opener in Nashville, Tenn. The Blazers will compete on Friday. UAB is coming off its best-ever finish at the Conference USA Championships in school history, as the Blazers placed third overall.
The 4K race will take place at the Vaughn's Gap Course at Nashville's Percy Warner Park. The women's race will begin at 5:30 p.m., followed by the men's race at 6:00 p.m.
"This is the fourth year in a row that we've opened the season at this event," said UAB head coach Ray Stanfield. "I think this is a great first meet for us. It's only a 4K run, so it's a good test of fitness right now. I'm anxious to see how our freshmen do. I also expect Elizabeth Ambrus to improve on her third-place finish from last season. There's going to be a lot of great competition this year, as Tennessee, Alabama and Vanderbilt are all competing."
The Blazers placed fourth in the Belmont Invitational in 2004. UAB had four runners place in the top-20, including Ambrus' third-place finish.
Results for the meet on Friday can be found after 8:00 p.m. at www.belmont.edu/athletics or through CFPI Timing at www.cfpitiming.com.
