BIRMINGHAM, Ala. --- The UAB football team hit the practice field early Monday afternoon in an effort to get practice in and avoid predicted afternoon showers associated with Hurricane Katrina. The Blazers were on the field for less than two hours before threatening weather entered the area.
The Blazers start the 2005 season Saturday, Sept. 3, as UAB travels to Knoxville, Tenn., to take on Tennessee.
"I think we were lucky to be able to get out here and get this practice in," said UAB head coach Watson Brown. "With the weather, I wanted to get this one in."
This will be UAB's second trip to Knoxville, as the Blazers fell to the No. 2-ranked Vols during the 1998 season, 37-13.
"We've been to these places before," said Brown. "It's nothing new to them. I think they look forward to going. I feel like we've got to play really well and I'm trying to convince these kids of that. This is the best team that we've played since I've been here. Just watching them on tape, they're just a really sound team. I think they have a shot at winning it all. We've got to play well and maybe still get some help from them. If we do play really well, then I think we have a shot."
UAB and the Volunteers will kick off at 12:30 ET/11:30 CT at Neyland Stadium. The game will be televised regionally on Jefferson Pilot.
