BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ---- UAB's 2006 non-conference football schedule is shaping up to be the school's most attractive, if not most challenging, in school history.
The Blazers will play games against a pair of Southeastern Conference schools, one from the Big XII Conference, along with a contest against Troy.
UAB will open the 2006 season with a home game at Legion Field on Sept. 2 against SEC foe Mississippi State. After an open date a week later, the Blazers will travel to Georgia to meet the Bulldogs in Sanford Stadium on Sept. 16. UAB visited Athens during the 2003 season and narrowly fell to Mark Richt's nationally-ranked team, 16-13.
Following the game against Georgia, the Blazers will then look to their Sept. 23 contest at Big XII opponent Oklahoma. UAB head coach Watson Brown served as the Sooners' offensive coordinator in 1993-94 prior to coming to Birmingham. The meeting between the Blazers and Oklahoma will be the first between the schools.
On Sept. 30, UAB will play host to Troy at Legion Field. With this season's meeting with the Trojans, the 2006 UAB-Troy contest will mark the sixth meeting between the two schools.
"This is quite a non-conference schedule," Brown said. "It is a very challenging schedule, but we are extremely excited about it. We always enjoy the opportunity to play SEC schools and we have made a habit of doing that, but we're also looking forward to playing against a school from the Big XII."
UAB's 2006 Conference USA schedule will include home games against Memphis, UTEP, Marshall and East Carolina with road contests at SMU, Rice, Southern Miss and UCF. The dates for the C-USA schedule will be announced later.
