Vonetta Flowers Named To Conference USA Women's Track And Field All-Decade Team

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ---- Former Blazer sprinter and jumper Vonetta Flowers was one of the Conference USA Track and Field standouts named to the league's All-Decade Team on Tuesday.
Conference USA is celebrating its 10th anniversary during the 2004-2005 season. In conjuction, the league is naming a Team of the Decade for each of the conference's 19 sports. Women's Track and Field is the latest sport to have its All-Decade Team released.
Flowers was a four-year letterwinner at UAB (1992-96) and a 1996 Olympic Trials qualifier. She was an NCAA All-American in the long jump, 100 meters and 200 meters and a six time conference MVP. Flowers set 12 school records and still holds four individual records, two team records and two freshman records. Flowers won four events at the 1996 Conference USA Outdoor Championships, leading the Blazers to a fourth-place finish. She also led UAB to a 43rd-place finish at the NCAA Championships and was the only C-USA women's athlete to earn All-American honors in 1996.
Flowers is a 2002 Olympic Gold Medalist in the women's bobsled event and a three-time member of the U.S. Olympic Festival Team, capturing the gold medal in the long jump in 1994 and the 4x100-meter relay in 1995. She has been ranked in the top-10 three times in the U.S. for the long jump.
Jenny Adams of Houston was named Athlete of the Decade and Leroy Burrell of Houston was named Coach of the Decade. Burrell, who is still coaching at Houston, has led the Cougars to three Conference USA women's championships. Voting was cast by head track and field coaches from each of the conference schools.
