CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas ----- The UAB men's tennis team won five of six singles matches in a 5-1 victory over Arkansas-Little Rock here at the 37th HEB Collegiate Championships.
With the win, the Blazers finished the tournament tied with Nebraska for fifth place. Fourteen teams from around the country were entered in the weekend.
Inclement weather on Saturday forced action to be delayed until Sunday. Thus, the Blazers' match with UALR was postponed a day and their fifth place match with the Cornhuskers was cancelled.
Even with the Nebraska match being called off, the Blazers were able to end the weekend successfully, dominating singles play against the Trojans.
UAB won straight set victories at the No. 2-6 positions, losing only at No. 1, in improving their record on the season to 8-4.
Anton Mavrin was a 6-2, 6-1 winner over UALR's Nihal Advani at No. 2 singles while Thomas Werkmann posted a win at No. 4 over the Trojans' Rain Roigas by the same score. UAB head coach Derek Tarr said Mavrin and Werkmann may have turned in his team's most impressive performances Sunday.
"I thought overall we came out and played well as a team," said Tarr, "but Anton and Thomas were really sharp. We wish we would have been able to have played Nebraska since they are nationally-ranked (No. 70), but we're still happy to leave here with two wins this weekend.
The Blazers' other singles winners Sunday against UALR (8-5) were Andre Maier (No. 3), Kristijan Mitrovski (No. 5) and Filip Kanczula (No. 6).
Doubles play was cancelled as the match was held indoors and the usual schedule of playing doubles before singles was altered.
UAB will next be in action next Sunday, March 13 when the Blazers play host to Charleston Southern at 1:00 p.m. at the Brook Highland Racquet Club.
