CHARLOTTE, N.C. ----- The UAB men's tennis team lost the doubles point, then reeled off victories at five of six singles positions to defeat Davidson, 5-2, Tuesday afternoon.
The win was the fifth in a row for the Blazers (12-4) and the sixth in seven matches.
After losing at two of three doubles spots and yielding the doubles point to the Wildcats, UAB rallied with wins at No. 1-5 singles. Sebastian Falk at No. 1 and teammate Anton Mavrin at No. 2 won tight first sets in their matches, but cruised in their second sets. Falk was a 6-3, 6-0 winner over Donald Miles while Mavrin handled Davidson's Flaviu Simihaien, 7-5, 6-0.
Other UAB winners included Andre Maier at No. 3 as the junior rallied for a 3-6, 6-1, 6-2 win over John Bolton. At No. 4 singles, the Blazers' Kristijan Mitrovski was a 6-4, 6-2 victor over Daniel Bermeo with Filip Kanczula winning for UAB at the No. 5 position, 6-4, 6-4 over the `Cats' Russ Burns. The Blazers' only singles loss was a 6-1, 6-3 setback at No. 6 as Adrian Tollstam fell to Davidson's Jay Chitty.
"I thought we came out a little flat at first," said head coach Derek Tarr, "and that may have partly been because we have not played a match in awhile (March 20 was last action) and we took Sunday off and traveled here yesterday. But after we lost the doubles point, the guys battled back in singles and played much better through singles play."
UAB is back in action Wednesday as they remain in Charlotte to meet its Conference USA rival Charlotte 49ers. The match is scheduled to begin at 2:00 p.m. ET.
