BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Johannes Spangenberg's 11-9 third set, tie-break win over Joey Unkenholz highlighted the UAB men's tennis team's win over in-state rival Jacksonville State at Brook Highland Racquet Club on Thursday afternoon. Spangenberg's 6-1, 2-6, 7-6 (11-9) win clinched a 6-0 victory for UAB (10-4), which has won five of its last six matches.
The Blazers fought cold temperatures and a light drizzle at the start of the match to overcome the Gamecocks (6-6). Sebastian Falk, Anton Mavrin, Andre Maier, Kristijan Mitroviski and Filip Kanczula all won in straight sets for the Blazers.
"Considering the conditions, I was pleased with our effort," UAB head coach Derek Tarr said. "Anytime you can overcome obstacles that might make you lose focus on your opponent, it shows you have toughness. We'll need that down the stretch, so winning the way we did today was a good sign."
Falk downed Vedran Sirola at the No. 1 singles position, 6-3, 6-4. Mavrin took his match at No. 2 singles against Arturo Nieto, 6-2, 6-4. Maier defeated JSU's Rodney Rapson, 6-1, 6-0 at No. 3 while Mitroviski won, 6-0, 6-1, over Andres Amores in the No. 4 singles spot. Kanczula's 6-1, 6-1 win over Christian Rybertt closed out No. 5 singles and Spangenberg's marathon finished the match.
UAB next hosts Murray State on Sunday, March 20, at 11 a.m. at Brook Highland.
