BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ----- An efficient passing game was among the highlights for the UAB football team here Sunday as the Blazers held their annual Blazer Day Spring Game.
Quarterbacks Darrell Hackney and Chris Williams combined for 326 yards in the scrimmage, hitting 30-49 passes and two touchdowns.
Hackney, who will be a senior in 2005, connected on 13-of-25 passes for 176 yards and both passing TDs as he hit Reggie Lindsey for a 29-yard score and Nick Coon on an eight-yard touchdown pass.
"I don't get real excited in the spring as far as offensive, defensive things as a whole," said UAB head coach Watson Brown. "I get more excited about individuals and it's hard to talk about a lot of them today until I watch the tape. Skill guys stick out because when they touch it, something good happens.
"As many players as we have back on this team, I'm much more of an individual guy in the spring. I can't wait to watch this tape to see what players got better."
The Blazers, coming off a 7-5 record and a berth in the Sheraton Hawaii Bowl, have most of their starters back on offense and defense; however, UAB will have to replace several key performers, such as wide receiver Roddy White and its starting linebacker trio of Zac Woodfin, Nigel Eldrdige and Gaylon Black. There is also a void at placekicker where All-Conference USA placekicker Nick Hayes held the starting job for four seasons.
"It's hard to judge the linebackers today," said Brown. "Joe Henderson who had really established himself, got hurt early in the scrimmage and that was disappointing. I'll have to watch the tape to judge the linebackers. We have to settle on our situation at linebacker. I thought Parker Mullins kicked the ball real well today (2-of-3 field goals, hitting from 46 and 31 yards and missing a 37-yarder).. We've got a kicker coming in who we recruited, so I think we've got a battle there.
The Blazers spent a majority of their time working on the passing game as Dan Burks was the leading rusher with 33 yards on only four carries. Norris Drinkard carried twice for 27 yards with Corey White rushing four times for 27 yards.
Lindsey was the leading receiver in yardage Sunday with four receptions for 82 yards and a touchdown. Carl Duncan had the most catches with six for 49 yards. Coon, Chico Cleveland and Steven Brown each had three receptions on the afternoon.
The Blazers will hold three more practices this week (Monday-Tuesday-Wednesday) before wrapping up spring drills.
