TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - UAB's men's golf team returns to action Friday, Saturday and Sunday at the Conrad Rehling Spring Invitational hosted by the University of Alabama. The event will take place at the Ol' Colony Golf Course in Tuscaloosa, and will play par-72, 7,041-yards.
Alan Kaufman's club is coming off a 15th place finish out of 17 teams at the difficult Mercedes-Benz Collegiate hosted by North Florida Feb. 20-22. The Blazers battled eight top-25 teams in that tournament and face another impressive list of opponents this weekend at Ol' Colony. This year's Rehling field features No. 7 Michigan State, No. 18 Georgia State, No. 29 Alabama and No. 30 Ole Miss dot the field. UAB will also face Conference USA rivals Memphis and Tulane for the first time this spring.
"We have been a break or two away from knocking off some of these teams," Kaufman said. "Our guys have scored low, but we haven't had a consistent tournament from everyone yet. Once we put one of those together, the results will follow."
UAB will send out seniors Chris Cousins and Ryan Thomas, who average 73.7 and 72.6 strokes per round, respectively, thus far this year. Sophomore Garrett Osborn, who carded an even-par 72 in the first round of the Mercedes in his last outing, will compete for the Blazers, as will junior Clark Brown and freshman Kaylor Timmons.
"We're looking forward to it," Kaufman said. "Every tournament we play makes us better. It's a good course and a strong field, so we're excited to tee it up."
The Blazers finished last year's Rehling in seventh place in the team standings. Host Alabama is the reigning team champ. UAB's Graeme McDowell took the individual title in the event in 2001.
