BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ----- The UAB football team worked out for more than two hours here Saturday, most of the practice spent in scrimmage-type situations. Saturday's practice was the Blazers' fourth of the spring and left head coach Watson Brown saying the session went just about as he thought it would.
"It went good for a first scrimmage," said Brown. "There were about six offsides penalties. The thing I liked seeing offensively was we had some big plays and that's what we've got to have. We've got to have some guys step up. Roddy (White) made most of them last year and we've got to have more people make them this year. Darrell's (Hackney) going to throw it in their area where they can get it. We've got to have some guys make those plays. That was probably the best thing about the scrimmage offensively.
"Other than that, there was inconsistency all the way around, but again, that's what you would expect for a first scrimmage," said Brown. "The defense had some real good plays and then gave up some big plays. I felt good about the practice overall. We're getting a lot of people work. The key for me this spring is watching the receivers and the linebackers. It's hard to talk about how they did right now until we get in and watch the tape.
Senior quarterback Hackney looked sharp in the workout and turned in some of the big plays Brown talked about. He scored on a 35-yard run and later connected with senior wideout Reggie Lindsey on a 29-yard touchdown pass. He also hit Lindsey on a 39-yard pass play.
Through the air wasn't the only way Lindsey contributed. He also was impressive on a 21-yard end-around play.
Reserve signal-caller Chris Williams had his moments in the scrimmage as well with a 30-yard TD pass to TE Jordan Erwin, a 22-yard pass to TE David Sigler and a 26-yard pass play to WR Carl Duncan.
The Blazers will resume spring drills on Monday.
