PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. - Senior Chris Cousins vaulted himself into the top-20 individuals, but UAB faltered a bit in the team standings Monday and stands 12th out of 17 squads at the 2005 Mercedes-Benz Collegiate Championship at Sawgrass Country Club. The Blazers, who were 11th after one round of play Sunday, shot a second round team score of 309 and are four strokes behind No. 12 Duke in the team standings.
Cousins, who was tied for 50th after a four-over 76 on Sunday, fired a one-over par 73 in Monday's second round and is now tied with 11 others for 19th on the individual leaderboard. Augusta State's Major Manning's two-under 142 after two rounds lead the way.
"The course is still playing tough, but we should have turned in better scores today," UAB head coach Alan Kaufman said. "It was good to see Chris make a move, but our others needed to do the same. We're still playing a tough field, but I hope we can maneuver ourselves up the ladder a little better on Tuesday."
Sophomore Garrett Osborn, UAB's top finisher in round one with an even-par 72, fired an 80 on Monday to drop to a tie for 42nd overall at 152 for the two rounds. Freshman Kaylor Timmons followed his first round 74 with a 78 and is also at 152 and tied for 42nd. Senior Ryan Thomas has rounds of 77 and 79 and is at 156 for the tournament thus far. Freshman Marco Zirov (80-79=159) also competed for UAB.
Alabama shot a team score of 291 on Monday to move into first place in the team standings with a two-round team score of 12-over-par 588. No. 9 UCLA and No. 25 South Carolina are tied for second while No. 20 Florida and LSU round out the top five. UAB is ahead of Coastal Carolina, No. 19 Georgia State, Arkansas, Florida State and Northwestern in the tournament standings.
The third and final round of the tournament takes place Tuesday on the par-72, 6,985-yard course. UAB's next action will be at the Conrad Rehling Spring Invitational hosted by Alabama on March 11-13 in Tuscaloosa, Ala.
