UAB Shuts Out Birmingham-Southern In Men's Tennis

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ----- The UAB men's tennis team turned in another impressive performance here Thursday, shutting out Birmingham-Southern, 7-0.
The Blazers (3-1) lost at No. 1 doubles but came back to win at No. 2 and 3 to claim the doubles point, then went on to win all six matches en route to the lopsided victory.
The only singles match extended beyond two sets was at No. 2 where UAB's Anton Mavrin outlasted BSC's Thomas Richter, 4-6, 7-6, 10-8. Birmingham-Southern fell to 0-2 with the loss.
UAB's No. 1 player, junior Sebastian Falk, was a 6-1, 7-6 straight-set winner over the Panthers' Eric Baumgardner. The Blazers' other singles winners included Thomas Werkmann at No. 3 singles, Andre Maier at No. 4, Kristijan Mitrovski at No. 5 and Filip Kanczula at the No. 6 position.
After Baumgardner and Richter won at No. 1 doubles for BSC over UAB's Kanczula and Maier, the Blazers came right back with wins at the Nos. 2 and 3 positions. Falk and Werkmann were 8-2 winners over the Panthers' Haas and Ray while Mavrin and Mitrovski took an 8-4 decision at No. 3 doubles over BSC's Mauricio Engler and Richard Turner.
"I thought our guys handled the conditions pretty well," UAB head coach Derek Tarr said of his team and the weather (the match was played in temperatures in the mid-40s with some wind). "Overall, this was a confidence booster for us. Birmingham-Southern is a solid team and is better than they were last year. I thought our guys responded."
The match was played at the Brook Highland Racquet Club in Birmingham. UBA will next be in action next Tuesday when they play host to North Alabama in a match originally scheduled for this past Tuesday.
