CASHIERS, N.C. - UAB recorded a 289 team score to finish two-over par for the tournament and capture the 2005 Western Carolina Intercollegiate title on Tuesday at the par-71, 6,404-yard Trillian Golf Links. Junior Garrett Osborn shot even par after a six-under 65 in Monday's first round to win his second individual title of the fall season.
"What a way to end the fall," UAB head coach Alan Kaufman said. "We had a very successful fall season and capped it off with a team win and another individual win. Garrett played the way he needed to for us, Kaylor Timmons turned in two exceptional rounds, Clark Brown overcame a high score on Monday and shot well Tuesday and our freshmen helped us. All-in-all, it's hard to not be pleased."
Osborn's victory added to his already impressive list of fall accomplishments. The Birmingham native took the Jerry Pate National Collegiate Title last month. He is currently ranked No. 2 nationally behind Oklahoma State's Pablo Martin in the Golfweek/Sagarin computer ratings.
Timmons shot identical one-over par 72s each day to finish in seventh place in the event. It was his second top-10 finish of the fall season. Freshman Josh Thompson, who recorded a hole-in-one on the par 3, 212-yard 15th hole in Monday's first round, shot 74-73 to finish tied for 12th overall. Brown trimmed five strokes off his round of 78 Monday to shoot two-over par 73 Tuesday and tie for 25th. Freshman Zack Sucher fired rounds of 70-82 and tied for 29th in the 60-man field.
UAB's team score of 570 ties the second-best 36-hole score ever recorded by a UAB squad. The Blazers shot 570 at the Peach State Invitational in Eatonton, Ga., in September of 1999. Ironically, the best all-time 36-hole score for UAB was a 563 at the 2003 Mason Rudolph Intercollegiate - the Blazers' last team victory.
UAB beat second place Radford by 18 strokes. The Highlanders were followed by Lipscomb, Charleston Southern and Elon in the top five. Belmont Abbey, High Point, Wofford, host Western Carolina, Dayton and Gardner-Webb rounded out the 11-team field in order.
Osborn's winning score of six-under par, 136 was four strokes better than Shawn Hall of Charleston Southern and Jayson Judy of Elon, who tied for second. Radford's Chris Dillow was fourth while Ryan Wilson of High Point finished fifth.
UAB enters the winter break with a 46-17 head-to-head record for the fall. The Blazers next play Feb. 5-7 in the Mercedes Benz Intercollegiate hosted by North Florida in Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla.
