BIRMINGHAM, Ala. --- The UAB football team practice for just over two hours Wednesday afternoon, as the Blazers prepared for Saturday's homecoming game against SMU at 6:00 p.m. (CT) at Legion Field. UAB practiced in helmets and shoulder pads, fine-tuning the game plan for the Mustangs.
UAB is 3-1 on the season and 1-0 in Conference USA after winning last week's conference opener against Rice in Birmingham. The Blazers are 2-0 this year when playing at Legion Field and have won three-straight games. SMU enters the game with a 1-4 overall record and 0-2 in C-USA.
"I think practice has been really good this week," said UAB head coach Watson Brown. "We've had two good practices and I think this team understands we have to go week to week. The way I'm looking at this league right now is that it's going to be tough to go undefeated. There are too many teams very close to the same ability. The ones that get ready to play every week and show up on Saturday's are the ones that are going to come out at the end."
UAB had 506 yards of total offense Saturday, as UAB defeated Rice, 45-26. Senior quarterback Darrell Hackney connected on 24-of-33 passes for 339 yards and two touchdowns in the contest. Senior wide receiver Reggie Lindsey caught five passes and a career-best 133 receiving yards to go with one TD reception.
Saturday will be the first all-time meeting between the two schools. SMU is coming off an overtime loss to Marshall. The Mustangs are led by senior quarterback Jarad Romo and junior wide receiver Bobby Chase. The Blazers will wrap up practice on Thursday with a helmets and shorts workout at UAB.
Tickets for Saturday night's game are available by calling the UAB ticket office at (205) 975-UAB1.
