BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ----- UAB and Southern Mississippi will hook up Friday night at Legion Field and the Blazers will be out to put a halt to a pair of narrow streaks.
The Blazers (3-3, 1-2 Conference USA) have dropped their last two games, both by one-point margins. UAB lost on a "Hail Mary" play two weeks ago in falling to SMU, 28-27, at home. Then last week at Huntington, W.Va., the Blazers were plagued by poor special teams play and a season-high 112 yards in penalties as they dropped a 20-19 decision to Marshall.
UAB also be seeking its first series victory over C-USA foe Southern Miss (3-2, 2-1). The Golden Eagles have won all five previous meetings though every meeting has been tightly contested. USM has won all five contests by a combined 23 points. Last year's contest -- the regular season finale for both teams -- ended with a 26-21 Southern Miss victory.
The Golden Eagles are coming off a 52-31 victory over UCF last weekend in Hattiesburg as the Golden Knights commited four first-half turnovers that were into Southern Miss touchdowns. USM scored 45 of its 52 points in the opening half.
The game will be televised nationally on the ESPN (kickoff is set for 7:06 p.m. CT). It will also be carried live on the ISP Blazer Sports.
