Blazers win, then fall at ITA Southeast Regional Tennis Championships

MEMPHIS, Tenn. ----- The UAB men's tennis team got off to an outstanding start here Friday, winning three early round matches at the ITA Southeast Regional Championships being held at the Racquet Club of Memphis.
However, later in the day, all four players representing the Blazers here this weekend, fell in singles matches.
The Blazers' Andre Maier, Kristijan Mitrovski and Anton Mavrin all won their first round matches, two of those coming over Southeastern Conference opponents.
Maier was a 6-1, 6-2 straight set winner over South Alabama's Mark Gellard in his first match but he dropped a three-set decision to Florida's 14th-ranked Greg Ouellette in the round of 64, 3-6, 6-2, 6-3.
Meanwhile, Mitrovski claimed a three-set victory over Paul White of LSU, 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 before losing to No. 32-ranked Joseph Jung of Alabama, 6-1, 7-5. UAB's other singles win Friday was provided by Mavrin who disposed of Ben Rogers of Tennessee, outlasting the Volunteer in three sets, 6-3, 3-6, 7-5.
Mavrin then fell to Ivan Bjelica of Mississippi State, also a three-setter, 3-6, 6-3, 6-1.
The Blazers' Sebastian Falk, who received a first-round bye, lost in his singles action, falling to Jakob Klaeson of Ole Miss, 6-3, 5-7, 6-1.
Falk and Maier will begin doubles play Saturday afternoon when they take on the Nicholls State tandem of Sebastian Normand and Vlad Popa. Normand and Popa won their first round match on Friday, downing Tim Krebs and P.J. Passalacqua of Miami, 8-6.
