BIRMINGHAM, Ala. --- The UAB football team hit the practice field here for more than two hours in full pads and helmets. The Blazers head on the road for the first time in over a month to take on Marshall in Huntington, W.Va., Saturday, October 15 at 5:00 p.m. (ET). This will mark the first time that UAB has met the Thundering Herd on the football field. The Blazers are looking to bounce back from a difficult, 28-27, loss to SMU this past Saturday night.
"Marshall is just a good, solid team," said UAB head coach Watson Brown. "I think the next six teams we play are all alike. They're all about the same in talent. We just have to play solid to win the rest of the way. I'm more concerned about us than them. We've just got to keep playing better football. They're a very good team, so we're just going to have to play very well on the road. It's a tough place to play. We're preparing ourselves to play better more than worrying just about Marshall."
UAB is currently 3-2 overall and 1-1 in Conference USA play. The Blazers had won three-consecutive games before falling to SMU. UAB played its first two games on the road, going 1-1, but has not been the visiting team since its 27-7 victory over Troy on Sept. 10. The Blazers are led by senior quarterback Darrell Hackney, who is 10th in the nation with a 156.6 passing efficiency. Hackney has 1,492 passing yards this season and has thrown for nine touchdowns.
The Thundering Herd fell to 2-3 overall after a 41-14 non-conference loss to third-ranked Virginia Tech Saturday. Marshall trailed by only seven, 14-7, at halftime, but could not stop the Hokies in the second half. The Thundering Herd did tally 281 total yards of offense, including 164 running yards in the contest. Marshall is 1-1 in conference action, falling to UCF, 23-13, but defeating SMU, 16-13, in overtime. The game will serve as homecoming for the Thundering Herd, as the school will retire the No. 72 of Frank Gatski, the only former Marshall player enshrined in the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
The game will be televised on the CSTV Football Nation on i (formerly PAX). It will be carried live on the ISP Blazer Sports Network on the flagship station, WYDE-FM 101.1.
