CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. ----- The UAB men's tennis team opened its fall season in impressive fashion here Friday at the UTC Baras Fall Classic as four players advanced to the quarterfinal round of singles.
Anton Mavrin, Kristijan Mitrovski and Sebastian Falk all will play in Saturday's quarterfinals of the "A" Flight after a successful opening day. Meanwhile, Blazer freshman Adrian Tollstan advanced in the "C" flight of singles.
Top-seeded Mavrin of UAB defeated Eduardo Cavasotti of Shorter, 5-7, 6-3, 3-2, (retired) to move on while Mitrovski won over No. 4 seed Brett Johnson of Wofford by a 7-6, 6-3 score.
UAB's Falk, a junior from March, German, pulled off one of the day's biggest upsets with his 6-3, 6-1 victory over second-seeded Felipe Lima of Belmont.
The Blazers' only singles loss of the day was also an upset as third-seeded Andre Maier fell to Andrew Stubbs of Wofford in three sets, 6-1, 2-6, 6-3.
Tollstan won his "C" Flight match over Jason Steinhorn of UNC Greensboro, 4-6, 6-3, retired.
In doubles play, the Blazers went 1-1 on the day as the duo of Falk and Maier beat the Southern Miss team of Reid Boureois and Tommy Ostenon, 8-2. The UAB team of Mavrin and Mitrovski fell to the Belmont tandem of Felipe Abreu and Andrew Searle, 9-8.
"I thought, overall, we fared pretty well today," said UAB head coach Derek Tarr, "especially considering this is our first tournament. We had some tight matches, but I think we are in good condition, and we were able to pull those out."
Play continues Saturday at the Champions Club here.
