BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ----- The UAB football team worked out for just over two hours here Wednesday, continuing its preparations for Saturday's Conference USA opener against Memphis.
The game will kick off at 6:00 p.m. CT at Legion Field and will be televised regionally by Comcast Sports Southeast (CSS).
The Blazers, coming off a 34-7 loss at Florida State last Saturday when they registered just 144 yards of offense, will face an unbeaten Memphis (3-0) team that returned all 11 starters on offense from last season's 9-4 squad.
Memphis was projected by many observers to be among the Conference USA contenders this season. UAB feels it can also be among the elite teams in the league.
"You've got two of the top teams in the league playing," said UAB head coach Watson Brown. "One of us walks away with a win and one of us walks away with a loss. The one that walks away with a win has got a little meat on its plate. I think you can lose one and still have a chance to win the league this year, but I don't think you can lose two and have any shot.
"They're all big games, but this is the first conference game for both us, so that makes it big," Brown said.
Brown was pleased with Wednesday's practice as his continued to look ahead to Saturday. "I thought we had a good practice today," said Brown, "a lot better today with some of the things we've got to try to do against them. As I've said, Memphis is not an easy team to prepare for."
UAB has had the upper hand in the series with Memphis of late, winning the last four meetings between the schools. The Blazers handed the Tigers a 24-10 defeat last October at Liberty Bowl Stadium.
